West Coast to East Coast Road Trip- Summer 2024

In the summer of 2023, while I was home in Corner Brook, Newfoundland and Labrador, helping my parents back up their house in preparation for their move to a condo apartment, we enjoyed a moment of relaxation on the back deck enjoying the heat of the summer sun. During this break, we discussed the ambitious idea of driving from Corner Brook, NL all the way back to Inuvik in the Northwest Territories via the Trans-Canada Highway. At first, I was skeptical that it would happen, but now, as the school year draws to a close, I’m just days away from embarking on this epic 10,000 km journey to pick up my parents.

To make this journey possible, I will be driving my “trusty” Chevy Silverado, affectionately known as “Murphy Brown,” across the continent from north of the Arctic Circle back to Newfoundland and Labrador. My route will take me from the rugged west coast back to the familiar east coast, with many stops and sights along the way. I’ll be sleeping in the back seat of my truck and camping under the stars, experiencing the diverse landscapes of the northern United States.

My itinerary includes a short stop in Missoula, Montana. From there, I will head to Yellowstone National Park, famous for its geysers, hot springs, and abundant wildlife. Next, I will visit Grand Teton National Park, where jagged peaks rise dramatically against the sky. I’ll then make my way to Badlands National Park, known for its striking geological formations and rich fossil beds.

As I continue my journey, I will explore the Black Hills National Forest, making stops to marvel at the awe-inspiring Devils Tower, the iconic Mount Rushmore, and the striking Cathedral Spires.

My drive will then take me along the scenic Highway 1 through Maine, a route renowned for its stunning coastal views and charming small towns. Re-entering Canada, I plan to spend a couple days exploring Saint John, New Brunswick, with its historic sites and bustling waterfront. From there I’ll travel to Barrington, Nova Scotia to visit with colleague.

My drive will then take me along the picturesque coastline up to the North Sydney Ferry Terminal on the breathtaking Cape Breton Island. Here, I’ll board the Marine Atlantic Ferry for a crossing to Port-Aux-Basques, Newfoundland and Labrador. Finally, I’ll complete the last leg of my journey with a scenic drive up the coast to Corner Brook, ready to embark on our family road trip to Inuvik.

At least this is the plan! Please stay tuned to see how this all plays out. I’m sure this trip will be filled with lots of ups and downs, beautiful scenery, amazing people and lessons learned.
